If you told me a couple months ago that I would end up trying microneedling, also known as derma-rolling, I would have told you that you were CRAZY! As someone who is horribly terrified of needles, any skincare tool that had the word “needle” in its name would be a strong a pass for me. Yet, someone how, here I am, writing all about how I LOVE IT!
When I first started exploring microneedling, I had a million and one questions going through my head: Does it hurt? Will it mark up my skin? Will it make me bleed? Will it leave scars? Does it feel like needles? But my biggest question was, why the heck would anyone choose to go this? Today, I wanted to walk you through the answers to all of these questions and share how this needle-fearing girl’s new favorite skincare tool is a dermaroller.

What is microneedling/derma-rolling?
Microneedling, also known as derma-rolling, is simply the process of rolling a bunch of very, very tiny *needles* (but hardly) on your skin to create very, very tiny holes in your skin. Your skin then works to repair itself by naturally producing collagen and elastin, giving your skin a smooth glow while reducing wrinkles and scaring. This process also helps your serum soak in much better. It’s important to note that at-home microneedling is much different than professional, dermatologist-performed microneedling. If you have a microneedling procedure done by a professional, the needles are much larger and it is must more intense.
What is a good derma-roller to start out with?
This one is less than $15 and the most perfect way to get started with microneedling – you can’t go wrong with a skin-changing tool that is the same price or less than a dinner out!
Does it hurt?
This was my BIGGEST fear and I am so happy to say NO! It sure doesn’t! Ashley of The Teacher Diva told me the most reassuring thing when we were chatting about microneedling – if you roll the needles on the dermaroller linked above on a balloon, it won’t even pop. That’s how gentle it is! As you can see in the pictures, the needles are super tiny and therefor, it doesn’t hurt your skin or make you bleed.
If you are anything like me and a bit scared the first time you use it, you pay psych yourself out and be a little more in tune with the tingly feeling it gives your skin. But after using it for a couple weeks, I have noticed I don’t even feel that sensation anymore. Whether you notice the sensation or not, it sure isn’t painful – I can promise you that!
Does it make you bleed or leave marks?
Absolutely not! It is too gentle to make you bleed. It also leaves no marks. However, your skin does get a little plump and red after use, so definitely only use it at night.
How do you use a dermaroller?
After cleansing your face and cleansing the dermaroller (I recommend soaking it in rubbing alcohol for a couple minutes before and after use) roll the dermaroller four times each vertically, horizontally and diagonally over your face. Easy enough! After rolling, I use a witch hazel toner and then apply serum and lotion.
How often do you use a dermaroller?
The dermaroller I recommend is .25 mm and therefor, you can use it daily if you choose! I use it every couple of days because otherwise, it dries out my skin and I typically have oily skin.
What are the best serums to use after microneedling?
Microneedling helps any serum soak in up to 90% better! You can keep using any serum you like. However, vitamin C is an incredible pairing to microneedling because it also helps increase collagen product. This serum, pictured below, is under $15 and includes hyaluronic acid too, which helps with skin hydration.
I persoanlly switch off using retina one night and vitamin C along with acne medication the next. Do not use retinol and vitamin C together as they will cancel each other out and become ineffective!
Since microneedling can dry out your skin, I LOVE using this moisturizer after applying my serum. It also does a wonderful job calming your skin.
I have been using my dermaroller for about a month now and I have already seen such incredible results! It has helped even out my skin tone and reduce acne scars. It also really helps keep acne away, aside from hormonal acne which seems to be just about impossible to fight.. Overall, I can say with confidence that this was the best $15 I have spent on skincare! If you’re on the fence, give it a shot!
